Backflow Preventers

Please note: If your backflow device passes the required testing, you do not need to replace it until it fails.

If it fails, it must be replaced with an approved type.  Approved type valves may also be repaired.  Older types which are no longer approved, are not allowed to be repaired, and must be replaced with an approved type.

Your home has a device that is used in the connection of your plumbing to the Sarasota water supply. This device prevents water from returning into the Sarasota public water system in case there is a loss of pressure, and is called a backflow preventer.  It is usually found on your front yard.  Sarasota county back flow info website.

These devices must be tested every two years, and you will receive a notice from the county when yours is due for testing. You can choose who will do the testing, and you will be charged for that service from the provider.  The testing company must be certified, and a list of the certified testers may be found here:  Certified backflow testers.

Many of these testing firms are also plumbing companies that can service or replace the valve if it fails the test.  However, a company that does the testing only, has no incentive to sell any plumbing work.  A “testing only” company can not replace the valve for you, and you then need to shop around for a plumber.  As consumers, you can choose how you wish to handle your testing requirement. Testing services tend to run from 25 to 100 dollars.

The older style DC type valve used on many of the homes in Park Trace are no longer approved for service, and they are not allowed to be repaired. They must be replaced when they fail with a new approved type. Replacement costs have been running in the 400-700 dollar range.
